The single best way for a beginner handyman to gain experience is with home improvements and maintenance.  A combination of skills along with the knowledge of tools helps in becoming a good handyman. Having a basic know-how of simple maintenance and repairs will help to save home repair costs. One has to train oneself in the art of self-reliance and problem solving, the two critical skills to have as a pro handyman.

  1. To stop running toilet

Bathroom is a place that we use multiple times in a day and many times. This invariably results in leaks and breakages. In case of a running toilet, first turn off  the water. Reach out to the water knob that controls the water flow. Then lift the top of the tank and you will find that the flapper or the flush valve has the problem. You can fix it with a readjustment of the float and the arm or have a complete replacement of the tank’s interior parts, depending upon the problem.

  1. Fix a loose tile

Fixing a loose tile is a minor problem that is worth getting fixed before it turns into a major repair. Loosen the adhesive from the tile by running a preheated iron over the loose tile to lift the tile out. Use alcohol to clean the beneath areas of the tile and remove the old adhesive with a putty knife. Then apply a new coating of adhesive on the gaps and on the tile. Press the tile into its place by using a rolling pin.

  1. Clean gutters

It is important to have a properly working drainage around your house. Clogged gutters will inevitably lead to the appearance of moisture in your house. Hence, it`s crucial to clean the gutters on a regular basis. You must inspect your home often and ensure it is free of moisture and properly ventilated. Keeping walls dry is important as moisture can pose a serious problem.

  1. Caulk

Replace caulking around your sink, shower or bathtub when you notice a bit of leakage. As caulking loses its effectiveness with time, you need to reseal it once a year at least. Scrape off the old caulking with a plastic putty knife and then clean the surface by rubbing alcohol. Apply a stripe of masking tape on either side of the surface of caulking to ensure straight and crisp lines. Use caulk with silicone to have a better mildew protection. Load it into a caulking gun and smoothly move it along the seam that you want to patch. Once applied, smoothen and flatten the line and remove excess caulk and then peel off the masking tape. Allow the caulking to dry for a day or two before exposing it to moisture.

Major wastes of energy can occur due to window leaks. Wind or moisture can seep through the cracks or unsealed joints. A simple fix for leaky windows is to apply caulk along the edge of the window.

  1. Have the right tools

One of the handyman essentials is the right basic toolkit featuring a pair of utility knives, hammer, some nails, pair of pliers, cutters, set of wrenches, screwdriver, measuring tape and a cordless drill. A rudimentary toolbox will always be handy whenever you encounter a broken tile, leaky tap or clogged sink.

  1. Hammer a nail

While driving a nail into harder surface or material, set the nail in place, hold the rod with pliers and hammer away.

  1. Fix a clogged drain

For messy clogged drains, fix them using liquid or gel drain cleaners. But if the clogging is severe, then you can try plunging. Use a sink plunger or a toilet plunger to clear the clogging.

  1. Know your homemade solutions

To remove stains and for household cleaning purposes, a solution of baking soda and white vinegar can work well. To clear a clogged drain, pour down a  cup of baking soda and a cup of vinegar down the drain for effective results.

  1. Painting

Due to normal wear and tear, your walls may need a fresh coat of paint. At times, stained areas of the wall may need retouch of paint of the original colour. Chipping of walls also may need retouching with paint. If you are thinking to apply a fresh coat of paint, then with a few litres of paint, you can execute the job yourself. However, to get a better finish, you can think of engaging the best handyman services in Dubai for your painting jobs.

  1. Clean your paintbrushes

In case you want to paint and find that your paint brushes are rigid due to dry coats of paint, then you need to submerge them in vinegar. In a saucepan, pour vinegar and bring it to boil and rolling. Immerse the bristles of the brush in hot white vinegar and this will remove the hard coat of paint and revitalize the bristles. Once the vinegar cools, you can wash the brush and the hard coat will fall away.
