What is Allergic Rhinitis and Understanding Its Treatment- GuestPostWeb

The immune system wage war on the particles in the air when they try to enter the body from breathing. The war is an allergic reaction to the presence of invaders. The reactions manifest as a runny nose and sneezing. The particles in the air or allergens (to classify them in one word)are pollen from the plant world, pollutants in the air due to industrial pollution, dander from animals such as pets, oxides of nitrogen and carbon spewing from exhaust gasses via automobiles and other internal combustion engines burning fossil fuels. This condition described has a medical term - Allergic Rhinitis. The war is an allergic reaction.

Symptoms of allergic rhinitis

People who suffer from allergies exhibit symptoms for many years. The symptoms of rhinitis can be season related such as when flowers bloom throwing pollen in the air. Hypersensitivity to the pollen carried by the wind manifests as a runny nose, itching of eyes, excessive watering of eyes, congestion of nasal passages, irritation in the nose, throat, and roof of the mouth.

How does pollen cause such symptoms?

The allergen (pollen) comes in contact with the body's defenders known as an immunoglobulin (IgE). These defenders exist in tissue cells, and during the battle, they release histamine which results in allergic reactions.

The European Academy of Allergy and Clinical Immunology (EAACI) has distributed research papers which summarize that over 150 million Europeans are suffering from allergic rhinitis. This number is rising in Western Europe followed by Northernand Eastern Europe. Pollen allergy is the chief cause followed by dust mites in homes.

How did the EAACI papers arrive at these findings?

They have researched air biologic quality which measures biologic pollutants in the air such as molds, pollen, and bacteria. Other pollutants such as chemical particles due to industry are also measured. There are over 400 monitoring stations in Europe equipped with pollen traps giving data. Efforts are increasing to equip data reporting via automatic systems.

What is the treatment for allergic rhinitis condition?

Clinical research by Schmitt et al., 2015, and Jacobsen et al., 2007 has proof that allergen immunotherapy (AIT) prevents allergic rhinitis and asthma in people suffering from this condition. Injectingescalatingdoses of allergens to patients is therecommended immunotherapy protocol by which IgE production is minized. In simple terms, the immune system of a patient is made to coexist with the allergen. The allergic rhinitis treatment constitutes injections under the skin. The desensitization process lasts for several years after the treatment ceases.Adjustment of dosages mitigates any side effects which are mild.

Who discovered immunotherapy treatment?

The credit goes to English researchers in fungi and bacteria Leonard Noon (1878 - 1913 and John Freeman (1877 - 1962) who discovered this treatment methodology in 1911. They based their findings on earlier research of William Phillips Dunbar (1863 - 1922) who laid claim that he had extracted the toxic substance from pollen that caused hypersensitivity or 'allergy' (coined by the Austrian doctor Clemens Freiherr von Pirquet (1874 - 1929).
