Awareness And Mental Fortitude Helps Pregnant Women Handle Allergies

Women who are pregnant carry an enormous amount of responsibility. They not only have to care for their health they have the responsibility of caring for their unborn fetus. On planet Earth, evolution has witnessed billions of babies born and more are in the offing.

Allergy as science knows it appeared courtesy of Dr. John Bostock - he described for the first time the allergic symptoms of hay fever in 1819; it took another 50 years for Charles Blakely to perform a skin test when he applied pollen to a break in his skin to determine the cause of allergy. Indeterminate particles in the environment induced reactions - such particles were termed "allergens". It is possible that before the term 'allergens' was understood pregnant women suffered from allergies that could be from two sources - cooking fires from charcoal and pollen. The women bore the suffering with fortitude and life went on as the Homo sapiens species evolved into what we are today.

Allergy statistics and tensions in pregnant women

Allergy is the epidemic of the 21st Century. Pregnant women are at a higher risk as environmental factors are not simple anymore. The air has so many different types of particulate matter that it is impossible to ascertain what exactly is causing the allergic reaction. Food contamination is another factor leading to allergic symptoms.

Allergic diseases such as asthma and rhinitis affect at least 30% of women who are in the childbearing age. Such medical conditions as allergies and pregnancy are the most common among pregnant women and perhaps the primary cause for later complications.

Doctors prescribe histamine in treating allergies. Research data assure that most histamine is safe including the new generation of drugs known as the nonsedating class. However the debate is on as pregnant women consider the risk of chemicals excreting into the breast milk.

It is impossible for anybody other than pregnant women to understand the suffering of allergies during pregnancy. The stress of a normal day in the life of pregnant women includes morning sickness and the weight of the unborn child growing heavier by the day. Factor in the symptoms of a running nose, nasal congestion, itching in the eye - you can imagine the internal and external distress on the lady. The mental tension is incalculable which increases as the toll of allergies and pregnancies begin to add up.

So how do the pregnant women handle allergies?

In a nutshell, continue doing what billions of women have been doing since the dawn of time. Bear the discomfort and minimize the intake of medication. No mother would like anycontamination to affect the production of breast milk. The emphasis of breast milk is perhaps best understood if all people - pregnant or not - listen to the TED (Technology, Entertainment, and Design) talk by Katie Hinde. She shares insights into the complexity of breast milk which is life-giving. She is an authority as a lactation researcher.
